Carl G. Lind House, circa 1870 was demolished to contruct a new home for
Judge Schottky in 1935
Schottky added the extra wing The Garden Studio in 1947.
Judge Lauritzen purchased the house in later years
Michael and Jeanne Adams purchased the house from the Lauritzen estate in 2007.
The home was constructed by a judge and sold to the succeeding judge -- so in its long 73 year occupancy, it was well-loved by only two families.
My parents-in-law, Ansel and Virginia Adams, were great collectors of books, as were their families and my husband and myself. The home is filled with fascinating books, art work, Stickley and designer furniture, latex mattresses, that elude a warm and delightful feel that makes it hard to leave.
The generous dining room includes an elegant, wrought iron table with seating for up to ten, a Stickley side board with table linens and place mats, more original artwork and a window with a view of the oaks, porch, and lawn.
A sunny room with seating for 4, the breakfast nook with more artwork, looks out to the garden and beautiful shimmering light on the blue oaks and across the front lawn.
Filled with nice morning light, the bright and updated kitchen provides guests with a new professional gas range, oven, full size refrigerator, dishwasher, with LG washer and dryer, coffee maker, hot water kettle, toaster, all necessary utensils, All Clad cookware, glasses and dish ware, a handy supply of condiments in the pantry and a window over the sink that overlooks the fruit trees and a lovely yard.

A Short Story: Sometimes we unintentionally discriminate against the unusual and unexpected. In Mariposa at the house, on a hot summer day, I was painting the steps when a young woman walked down the street and stopped to talk with me. She was going to be returning to the east for her third tour of duty in Iraq. She also shared that she was traveling alone on her way to Yosemite, had stopped in Mariposa while seeking to find a sense of peace and time. Finding it delightful she wanted to spend at least two of her five days there. I was touched; I, too, find Mariposa a special little town in the Sierras.
The day was hot, she had postponed her trip to Yosemite for a day and gone down to the Merced River, taken a swim and was walking through the historic district of Mariposa when we began visiting.
My visitor was composed, yet of course, did not know if she would survive the tour and had purposefully chosen to spend her special days alone in Mariposa and Yosemite before the next tour.
How I wish she could have had the opportunity to stay in The Adams House Garden Studio instead of a motel room. I admired her courage...her independence, and it occurs to me that I want to be sure people who are re-finding themselves such as she was, storing up memories to offset others that could be devastating, are welcome.
I too, travel alone sometimes, feel more welcome and at peace some places, than others. The Adams House Mariposa is inviting and congenial, is pleasant and as gracious to stay in alone, as within a friendly space that is full of possibilities. Welcome to couples, friends, families traveling together, but also for the party of one.
Our homes evolve, and one of my basic premises is that they be attractive, interesting, and allow the individuals to shine, to be content, to feel more responsive in life than they otherwise might. A place of beauty where guests come to renew and to rest. Jeanne Adams - Owner
